Starting out as a sawmill in Havixbeck near Münster, the company transformed itself into a veneer factory after the war in 1950. As early as 1928, Heinrich Wehmeyer took over Westfälisches Holzkontor in Münster, a timber wholesaler on Hansaring at Münster harbour that specialised in plywood, solid oak and blockboard. Despite the destruction of the Second World War and the challenges of the post-war period, the company remained true to its principles and continuously expanded its market position.
Innovation, expansion and focus on European oak
From the 1960s onwards, the second generation under businessman Heinrich Johann Wehmeyer expanded the product range and laid the foundation for today's dual and international business strategy: the production of high-quality veneers and the wholesale of wood. For years, the focus has been on European oak, which is known for its outstanding quality, durability and natural beauty. With a clear focus on this high-quality wood species and on international trade in the Benelux countries, America and Asia, the company has been able to grow steadily.
Company focuses on sustainability and quality
Since the 2000s, Heinrich Wehmeyer Westf. Holzkontor has been increasingly focusing on sustainable production and environmental standards. In order to remain competitive, the company discontinued its own veneer production in autumn 2014. Since then, the veneer logs purchased annually by Wehmeyer have been processed into veneers of the highest possible quality at the Danzer/Melnik (CZ) contract sawmill. Wehmeyer is investing in environmentally friendly technologies and modernising both locations in order to ensure sustainable and high-quality wood marketing in the future.
Two locations in the Münsterland region - double the expertise
Today, the company operates two locations: Havixbeck is home to the internationally active veneer trade with a high-performance commercial warehouse covering approx. 3,500 m². The focus is on high-quality European rift and flat-cut oak veneers in all standard thicknesses and many other types of wood. Strategically located in Münster in the Haus Uhlenkotten industrial park at the junction of the A1 MS Nord and B 54 motorways, the timber wholesale business, newly built in 2009, offers a wide range of sawn timber and wood-based materials. With its own fleet of vehicles and a 5,000 m² modern warehouse, the team in Münster guarantees punctual and reliable deliveries.
Looking to the future - 3rd & 4th generation
With a century of experience and a strong specialisation in high-quality European wood species, Heinrich Wehmeyer Westf. Holzkontor GmbH & Co. KG is preparing for the coming years. The anniversary is an opportunity for the company to honour the past and, at the same time, to inspire the next generation of customers and partners with fresh ideas and innovations. ‘We are proud of what we have achieved and look to the future with confidence,' says Managing Director Heiner Wehmeyer. ‘Our goal remains to combine high-quality veneers and wood products, especially in European oak, with sustainable responsibility and innovative solutions - yesterday, today and tomorrow.' Managing Director Klaus Wehmeyer, who heads the timber wholesale business, adds: ‘This success is only possible thanks to the dedication of our employees. That's why we celebrated this anniversary together with all our current and former employees.' Since 2020, the third generation, now in charge, has been actively supported by Hendrik Johann Wehmeyer, the son and nephew of the company's founder.
