Trending: wood veneer as a noise mitigator

Bad Honnef. You go to a restaurant, looking forward to meeting up with friends and a tasty meal. After a short time, you notice that you can hear everything except your conversation with your friends. It is simply too loud; no thought has been given to sound insulation. Yet, good room acoustics are just as important for customers and guests as good lighting. And there is no reason for bad acoustics, because there are plenty of sound absorbing materials with which noise can be silenced. One of the most climate friendly and effective of these materials is real wood veneer.

Good room acoustics ensure that people can hear each other, that sounds heard are not muffled or shrill and that you do not hear all the background noise instead of your conversation with the person sitting next to you. Broadcasting studios, concert halls and recording studios have long since identified the importance of sound insulation, because otherwise, clean concert and radio play recordings would not be possible. Here, too, veneer has been used - often as a perforated surface. Wall elements, complete walls or the room ceiling with and without false ceilings are covered with the natural material, so that it can develop its acoustic effectiveness on all required surfaces. “Veneer has always impressed with its technical quality and is now valued even more due to its contribution to climate protection”, explains Ursula Geismann, Secretary of Initiative Furnier + Natur (IFN). Veneer is made of wood; it is renewable, sustainable, ecological and climate-friendly. Loud restaurants, noisy shopping centres or deafening railway waiting rooms or airport departure lounges are well advised to invest in climate-friendly sound insulation. Today, veneer is more versatile than ever before. The wood colours and surface character of the perforated textures, from matt to rough-sawn through to polished, offer sufficient choice for most taste preferences. “If there is anyone for whom this is not enough…, not a problem, because acoustic sound insulation elements made of real veneer can also be printed in an individually requested design”, added Geismann.

Initiative Furnier + Natur (IFN)
Initiative Furnier + Natur (IFN) e.V. was founded in 1996 by the German veneer industry and its partners. The purpose of the association based in Bad Honnef is to promote veneer as a material. It is now made up of European companies in the veneer industry, trade and the veneer processing industry as well as professional associations of the timber industry and other institutions.
