The veneer used in the new Renault Megane E-Tech Electric bears the name of its manufacturer: "NUO". "This is a unique real wood veneer that is laminated onto a textile carrier material and then lasered. The fine engraving created in the laser process ensures the extreme flexibility of the wood surface, which makes complex three-dimensional geometries possible with a single, continuous surface made of real wood. It also gives the automotive interior an exciting look and feel," explains NUO Automotive Product Manager Adriano Pistola. Pistola was originally rooted in the Italian fashion industry, at the innovative textile label MyMantra, which developed the forerunner of today's NUO based on the idea of animal welfare.
The Renault Megane E-Tech's trim strips clad in NUO veneer extend across the entire instrument panel and into the door panels. "However, it was a long way before this project could be realized," recalls Pistola and continues: "The first contact with Renault came about at the Salone del Mobile 2015 furniture fair in Milan. The first material samples were exchanged and ideas for a concept car were developed. As Renault had not used wood in its vehicles for 30 years and MyMantra only had know-how in the fashion sector, could only produce small formats in small quantities and was not familiar with the automotive sector, the search for a suitable company from the wood industry that already supplied the "premium models" sector in the automotive industry finally began. "I came across Schorn & Groh through an automotive supplier. The Karlsruhe-based company took over MyMantra and founded NUO GmbH. This focuses primarily on research, development, production and sales of our product. This is how the collaboration with the German veneer manufacturer began," says Adriano Pistole.
By acquiring a high-performance laser and building up expertise, the company was finally able to produce on a large scale. "The advantage for Schorn & Groh was being able to offer an absolutely new, innovative material in large formats for other industries. This was the beginning of NUO's success story," recalls Rolf Loose-Leonhardt, Managing Director of Schorn & Groh and its subsidiary NUO. Suppliers for wood composites were sought and numerous trials with wood dyes for the automotive industry followed. "We had to get technicians and developers from various industries on board and create completely new surfaces with them. A joint workshop brought the breakthrough - and the prototype began to take shape," adds Pistola. The key words "material design" and "sustainability" were always an important part of the project. "What could be more obvious than using renewable materials such as wood in a vehicle with a sustainable electric drive and almost completely recyclable plastic parts? The lime wood used is of European origin and comes from forests that are managed in an environmentally friendly way," says Pistola and concludes: "The laser engraving of NUO makes the look and feel extraordinary, its filigree straight lines give it a modern appearance and at the same time the wood structure and naturalness are retained. This makes NUO the perfect product for high-quality cars such as the Renault Megane E-Tech."
