Vegan products are in fashion: Veneer as an alternative to leather for handbags
Bad Honnef. As a sustainable and naturally renewable raw material, wood is experiencing a renaissance. Thanks to its physical flexibility, veneer, as wood's thinnest form, offers still more areas of use: Whether in furniture making, say as a front of kitchens and cabinets, in interior design, as a wall element, as a spectacles frame or as a translucent lampshade. Veneer always scores with its ecological and individual properties. Veneer is in fashion. At the same time, as a plant material, it also matches the current zeitgeist in a very particular way. As people are increasingly critical of intensive livestock farming, vegan alternatives are not only trending when it comes to food, explained Ursula Geismann, Secretary of Initiative Furnier + Natur (IFN).
The Italian firm Noah, founded in 2009, has long since produced vegan shoes, belts and purses. It has now developed a vegan handbag made of finest veneer. The outer material made from millimetre-thin ash wood - in black, brown, lime green - or shimmering eucalyptus veneer in blue, is characterised by its natural figure. The bag is completed by a hard-wearing and fine cotton lining. At the “veganfach trade fair in Cologne, Noah received the “Vegan Innovation Award 2018 for this new and vegan “Silva handbag. The basic idea is to create products with Italian style and at the same time to act responsibly towards the environment, especially animals and human health and to create a real alternative to leather. The discreet, removable metal chain makes Silva an adaptable eye-catcher, not only as a clutch bag, but also as an elegant evening bag. Its individual wood look always cuts a naturally fine figure. Veneer is thus suitable as an alternative to leather and is even already being discussed as an alternative for many products made of plastic. “In future, we will increasingly come across real wood veneer as disposable tableware, a substitute for plastic cards or as packaging, predicted the IFN Secretary.
Initiative Furnier + Natur (IFN)
Initiative Furnier + Natur (IFN) e.V. was founded in 1996 by the German veneer industry and its partners. The purpose of the association based in Bad Honnef is to promote veneer as a material. It is funded and supported by European companies in the veneer industry, trade and the veneer processing industry as well as professional associations of the timber industry.
