Elegant, chic, trendy: Fine veneers refine women

Bad Honnef. Handbags make women's hearts beat faster and are one of those accessories that they should never leave home without. But handbags made of wood? At first they sound bulky, stiff and impractical. But the Holzmanufaktur Mössner in Magdeburg thinks differently. There the trained master joiner Oliver Mössner makes tasteful women's bags from fine veneer. “Real wood veneer lends our handbags a very personal touch. At the same time, women are often surprised at how flexible and light our bags are”, says Mössner.

For years, Mössner used veneer in furniture making. The idea, to use the natural material to refine handbags, came to him spontaneously one night. He actually only wanted to make one bag as a unique gift. But the response to his first work, an homage to round-bodied, curved women's bags of the 1970s, was extraordinarily positive. Full of passion for his work, he therefore created many more bags and at the end was able to present his first “fine wood” handbag collection, which vividly shows the diverse possible combinations of wood veneers and leather.

Mössner preferably uses veneers from wood species with a strong character when it comes to colouring, texture and grain - for example, fruit wood such as damson, cherry or pear. But he also good quality walnut and oak veneers. He also makes bags using other wood species requested by customers. Only European wood species are used, because Mössner is firmly convinced that the breadth of colour and textures of domestic wood are in no way inferior to those of exotic species. “The natural material veneer shows off the aesthetics of wood in an attractive way and is therefore very suitable for making unusual handbags”, agrees the Secretary of Initiative Furnier + Natur (IFN), Ursula Geismann. Initiative Furnier + Natur (IFN)
Initiative Furnier + Natur (IFN) e.V. was founded in 1996 by the German veneer industry and its partners. The purpose of the association based in Bad Honnef is to promote veneer as a material. It is funded and supported by European companies in the veneer industry, trade and the veneer processing industry as well as professional associations of the timber industry.
